Are You a Nervous Dental Patient?

posted June 3rd, 2018

Though some people are absolutely fine with a visit to the dentist, others are not. Being a nervous dental patient is not uncommon and you’re definitely not alone. There are alot of causes of anxiety surrounding a trip to the dentist, such as a bad dental experience in the past or a general fear of dentists. Luckily, if you’re a nervous dental patient, we can help.

How Do We Help Nervous Dental Patients?

At Bite Dentistry, we do everything we can to help patients who are nervous. This includes building a good rapport with our patients, ensuring we have a calm environment and answering any questions you may have. However, sometimes sedation is required.

  • IV Sedation - You may be already be familiar with IV sedation, as it’s a common sedation technique for dental treatments and medical procedures. IV sedation is relatively simple and involves a Valium based drug. We offer intravenous sedation to nervous patients, one of the benefits being that patients feel the treatment has only taken a matter of minutes when it may have taken much longer. This allows complex dental treatment, which may normally take several visits, to be completed in fewer appointments.

  • RA Sedation - RA sedation is often referred to as ‘gas and air’ and it can be used for a lot of nervous dental patients. We offer our patient-based conscious sedation including intra-venous sedation, which really helps to remove anxieties. With this technique you feel much more relaxed and calm. Although you are not asleep the treatment does not bother you. Afterwards most patients think that they were asleep. Are you nervous? Let us know when you book your first visit and we will do all we can to ensure your visits are taken at a pace you are comfortable with.

  • Oral Sedation - If you’re a nervous dental patient who needs help calming down before a dental visit, oral sedation could be the answer. Oral sedation works by taking a Valium based tablet the night before dental treatment to ease anxiety, stress and worry. We sometimes recommend this method to patients who are afraid of needles.
